Chops and Karate Chops
What it does have, however, is a wealth of small businesses. Many of the, are shops and stores run by local people, some are even run by the second and third generations of the same families. It is not surprising then that shop staff and customers are often on first name terms.
Or that the shop’s staff level of practical knowledge, product knowledge and general expertise in their field is so high.
Small businesses means that Staple Hill has an enormous number of specialist shops offering the range of goods you know you won’t find in the big shopping centres or out-of-town shopping malls or even in the big superstores. You can buy everyt8uhign from computers to carpets, kitchen gadgets to gifts, fresh meat to frozen meals.
Many other local High streets have a general sports equipment and clothing shop, but Staple Hill can also offer a specialist skate and ski shop.
Karate enthusiasts are also making a beeline to Staple Hill since Bath Karate Club member decided to use his knowledge in the retail would and open Enso Martial arts supplies.
Entering the retail market is a new venture for Mr Fearis who until recently worked in Bristol printing firm Wiltshires.
“I spent many years working in the printing industry, but my real interest has been martial arts, “ he said. “I’ve decided now is the time to do something about it. “The whole point about the shop is to help people by providing martial arts equipment they need at reasonable prices. As long as I earn enough to pay the bills, I’ll be happy.”
Mr Fearis trains in shotokan karate, a form of martial art originally developed in Okinawa, Japan, that is now practised throughout the world.
He is a long-time member of Btah Karate Club, which meets at Culverhay School sports centre, and the YMCA.
The word enso means circle in Japanese and symbolises the spirit of the martial arts.
As well a advice on martial arts and equipment, a therapy room is being set up with a qualified practitioner, who will be able to treat injuries sustained during martial arts training.
